To give it the official title of Highcliffe on Sea, it is an area situated to the east of Christchurch and around 11 miles from Bournemouth. Heading west you will find Barton on Sea, New Milton and Lymington, and the New Forest National Park is just a short drive away.
Property styles vary with a lot of recent new build development around the area. There are well wooded surroundings and a High Street running parallel to the coast road, offering a range of shops and restaurants.
People who live in the Highcliffe area say it truly has a village community feel, which makes it an attractive place to live.
Take a walk along the coastal paths, through Steamer Point nature reserve or down the zig zag to the sea. From here you can easily walk to Mudeford where you can enjoy the wonderful beaches or watch the fisher men land their daily catch at Mudeford Quay.
Around the area
Highcliffe was once a tiny hamlet of thatched cottages around common land with a large pond and was known as Slop Pond. Thankfully, it is now more attractively named and a thriving and interesting place to live.
The history of Highcliffe begin with John third Earl of Bute who build a home (now believed to have slipped into the sea). Lord Bute found the rapid advances of the sea to be disturbing and sold his land. The gatehouse to his property is still in existence and forms part of a very popular hotel and restaurant – the Lord Bute.
Highcliffe also boast a grade I listed building built between 1831 and 1835 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay. Highcliffe Castle has a chequered history, including near dereliction, but now stands proud on the clifftops set among landscaped gardens.
Harry Selfridge, American owner of the London department store rented the castle from 1916 to 1922 and brought his family to live in Highcliffe. Harry Selfridge died in 1947 and is buried in St Marks churchyard in Highcliffe, next to his wife and mother.
